Onboarding for new teaching staff at TUM

We know that beginning your career as a university teacher can be challenging. To make your start in teaching at the Technical University of Munich easier, we have developed a didactical onboarding course.

In this twelve-hour online course, we teach you the essential didactic and technical basics for teaching at a university. You can gain a concise understanding of university teaching through the designed synchronous and asynchronous elements over a period of four weeks. Further, you can get in touch with teachers from the other Schools who are in a similar situation as you. Our focus is on combining evidence-based fundamentals with practical suggestions and concrete strategies so that you can apply the content from the course directly to the planning and delivery of your course.

Key features:

  • You will learn about didactical methods and digital tools that can help you to teach effectively and efficiently.
  • You will get to know other new teachers and gain insights into subjects from other Schools.
  • You will receive study units, which count towards gaining the Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education at Bavarian Universities.
  • This course is free for you as a teacher at the Technical University of Munich.

The Onboarding Program pursues multiple objectives. In addition to imparting basic knowledge of higher education pedagogy, it intends to promote networking among new teachers within and outside their own School. Particularly, it can be helpful for new teachers to gain a basic understanding of how learning, teaching, and assessing work at a university. The Onboarding Program aims to provide lecturers who have little teaching experience with methods that they can immediately implement to improve teaching at TUM. Lectures interesting in further enhancing their teaching expertise can pursue additional courses and workshops offered by ProLehre.

The course is divided into five modules:

  • Introduction (1 h): Here, participants are given a general overview of the Onboarding Program. In addition, networking elements ensure that participants get to know each other.

  • Self-Reflection (1 h): In this module, participants are invited to reflect on their teaching experience so far, becoming aware of their own teaching style.

  • Explore Teaching Basics (3 h): In this module, participants will get an overview of success factors for teaching and learning, such as activation, feedback, and outcome orientation.

  • Your Elective (5 h): Participants now have a choice - they can either explore how to supervise student theses, learn how to didactically design exams, or concentrate on designing courses. Each elective includes a one-hour peer group meeting.
  •
  • Wrap-Up (2 h): In the final course element, participants reflect on ideas that they plan to incorporate from the Onboarding Program into their own teaching and define their next steps.

The Onboarding Program consists of synchronous and asynchronous elements and takes place exclusively online on the Moodle learning platform and via Zoom. The course runs over a period of four weeks and involves 12 hours of work or 16 study units of 45 minutes each. The course is held in English. Participants enrol independently in the corresponding Moodle course.
