Competency Model for Higher Education

Our competency model for teaching in higher education gives you a compact and pragmatic overview of basic pedagogical knowledge and the teaching competencies derived from it. It supports you with guiding questions in assessing your own teaching ability and gives you boosts to purposefully enhance your teaching skills and strengthen your competency profile.

  1. Ideally, you will start your development as a teacher through analyzing your competencies, strengths, and weaknesses. The key questions in the Competency Model will help you with this.
  2. Based on this analysis, you identify areas in which you want to develop further and set goals for your progress.
  3. In the third step, you make a plan to achieve these goals—for example, through continuing education courses, reading books, reflective practice and feedback, a teaching portfolio, or teaching projects. You will also consider how you can check whether you have achieved your goals.

Your department liaison will be glad to support you in all these steps—in conversation, through analyzing your evaluation results, by conducting a Teaching Analysis Poll, or through a teaching observation and consultation in one of our courses or online-seminars.
