Writing theses is a very complex and challenging task which is usually mastered over many years of practice. Supervising this process is nearly as complex and requires various competencies: besides expert knowledge in their field of study, supervisors need to support students during their writing processes without interfering insufficiently or too much. Relevant aspects are the definition of assessment criteria and an objective evaluation of students’ theses; the knowledge about the writing process, types of writers, writing strategies, and how to cope with writer’s block; knowing where and how a supervisor may or may not interfere with their students’ writing processes; the ability to clearly communicate requirements and expectations to students, as well as techniques to give constructive text feedback. Today, the emergence of AI-based programmes like ChatGPT also offers challenges which supervisors must address. In this course, we consider these and other challenges the role as a supervisor brings and discuss the necessary skills. We also think about efficient ways of coaching and advising students online. The participants’ own experience in supervising theses will serve as case studies for reflection.

*Please note*: This course focuses on how to supervise students in their project of writing their theses, and not how they work, for example, in the laboratory.
Course participants require a stable internet connection (best by a LAN cable) via computer or laptop, as well as a microphone and webcam. Each participant should have one (anonymised) case of a thesis supervision which they have already done, are doing at the moment, or will do in the future to work on.

Please save about 3 hours between the synchronous meetings, during which you have time to evaluate a sample thesis according to a given grading rubric.

Resilience - a much-used buzzword in recent years. Zielsetzung dieses Kurses ist, die Wirkmechanismen der eigenen Stimme kennenzulernen. Dabei stehen folgende Aspekte im Vordergrund: Wie funktioniert meine Stimme? Wo liegen hier meine persönlichen Stärken und Schwächen? Wie kann ich meine Stimme im Alltag schonen? Wie kann ich meine Stimme gezielt einsetzen? Kurze Videos mit Lehrinhalten, die auf Social Media Plattformen (bspw. Instragram) veröffentlich werden, können verschiedene Zwecke für Lehrende und Studierende erfüllen:

• sie machen Lust auf den Lehrinhalt,
• sie vermitteln Inhalte asynchron,
• können Relevanz zum (Studien-)Alltag aufzeigen,
• eine junge Zielgruppe ansprechen.

Gleichzeitig ist es oft einfacher und weniger zeitaufwendig als erwartet, gute Videos mit einfachen Mitteln, die jede:r zur Hand hat (Smartphone, z.T. kostenlose Software oder auch Boardmittel), zu erstellen. In diesem Workshop erarbeiten wir gemeinsam theoretisch und praktisch, wie man kurze Videos „quick and dirty“ erstellen und auf Social Media Plattformen veröffentlichen kann. Die Diskussion über die Strategie hinter diesen Veröffentlichungen sowie die exemplarische Besprechung von Alternativen stehen dabei im Fokus. Ferner wird ein Überblick an KI-Tools gegeben, die Sie im Videoschnitt einsetzen können. In der Selbstlernphhase um den Präsenztermin herum können sich die Teilnehmer:innen theoretisch vorbereiten und nach dem Kurs ihr eigenens Projekt finalisieren.

Dieses Seminar lädt dazu ein, sich Gedanken über die eigenen handlungsleitenden Gewissheiten zu machen und in der Gruppe auf ihre Funktionen für die Lehrtätigkeit zu prüfen. Dabei werden Elemente des eigenen Lehrstils bzw. der zugrunde liegenden Lehrphilosophie besprochen und in Bezug zu eigenen Reflexionen zu Lehren und Lernen gesetzt. Auch konkrete Handlungsparadoxien, die jede Lehrtätigkeit beinhaltet werden diskutiert. Der Abschluss bildet eine schriftliche Reflexion, auf die ein individuelles Feedback folgt.

Communication runs through all areas of cooperation: from the first contact to the professional exchange of arguments with the aim of gaining an extended perspective on the subject of science. To know how to guide and steer a conversation and chair a discussion or meeting is the basis for qualified exchange and the further development of ideas. These didactic methods are not only important for the extended scientific context (symposia, conferences, scientific discussion forums), but can also be useful in non-university everyday life.
In order to run these forms of interaction successfully, we discuss and practice different techniques.

In diesem praxisorientierten Workshop lernen Sie Methoden kennen, mit denen Sie Ihre Studierenden motivieren und deren Lernerfolg fördern. Sie erhalten einen Überblick zu Einsatzmöglichkeiten von und Auswahlkriterien für geeignete Methoden – je nach Lehr-Lernziel, Phase & Rahmenbedingungen. Vor Ort erproben Sie eine Auswahl, reflektieren Ihre Erfahrungen & Bedürfnisse und erweitern damit Ihr Methoden-Repertoire.

Teaching can be an enormous amount of fun. Gamification is one way to ensure that both you and your students enjoy the knowledge transfer. There is a wide range of ways to incorporate gamification into your teaching. In this course, you will work with your own material and implement gamification mechanisms immediately. The focus is on the implementation of gamification mechanisms, but the underlying theory is not neglected.

What is gamification? Gamification initially only means that game elements are used in a non-game context. However, the effect can be explained by motivation theories. In this course you will learn more about these theories and their use for gamification. You can then use this connection in your teaching.
With me by your side, you will develop various gamification elements in this course that you can apply directly in your course. Using your own teaching materials, we will develop quizzes and experiment with exciting ways to use them. You will create stories to make your teaching activities more exciting. We will also work together to design meaningful and motivating hands-on projects for your students. You will be able to directly implement and try out what you have learned in your own gamification application.
Please bring your own course material at basic level, for example material on introductory events. Furthermore, you only need notes, pen, an internet-enabled device and (reward) snacks of your choice.

After the pandemic, therapeutic institutions and health workers have seen a surge of mental health problems. And even before, students have typically been burdened with heightened amount of pressure and stress - oftentimes leading to declines in their productivity as well as physical and mental well-being.
Albeit it is not the role of a university lecturer to therapeutically heal, help or assist a student in need - how to respond and act appropriately in such a circumstance, however, very much is.
In this workshop we will elucidate the specific and general risk factors for mental issues in students, discuss different profiles of mental illnesses and train effective ways of communication and referral - and all this while exercising a healthy amount of self-care and mindfulness.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course, participants will be able to,

• explain why students make for an especially vulnerable group of people for mental health issues,
• differentiate minor learning slumps from crises up to emergencies,

Exams often cause sleepless nights not only for students, but also for lecturers. The responsibility that teachers take on in their function as examiners is great, and so is the anxiety about it, especially among new teachers. Therefore, the workshop will focus on the following questions: What functions do different exams have? What do I have to consider when preparing, conducting and marking a competence-oriented examination? How can I design an examination so that it meets the test quality criteria, is legally error-free and is fair for both the examinee and the examiner? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of examinations with regard to competence orientation? How does testing and evaluating change in the age of artificial intelligence? The answers to these questions will help in the preparation, implementation and follow-up of a successful examination.

The workshop takes place as an online seminar via Zoom . Input phases alternate with small group and individual work phases. In the run-up to the seminar, participants are introduced to the topic asynchronously through preparatory tasks two weeks before the seminar begins (3 AEs). After completion of the course, smaller work assignments invite participants to integrate the learned content into their own teaching practice, to be handed in during the four weeks following the event.

Für den Erfolg einer Beratung sind gute Kommunikation und das Verständnis vom jeweiligen Beratungsanliegen wichtig. Visualisierungen können dabei eine Schlüsselrolle übernehmen, indem sie Informationen und komplexe Zusammenhänge sichtbar machen. Durch das gemeinsame Erarbeiten von Visualisierungen entsteht nicht nur Vertrautheit zwischen Beratenden und Klient:innen, sondern auch ein greifbares "Produkt", das als visuelle Zusammenfassung der Beratung dient. Dies schafft Verbindlichkeit und fördert den Erfolg einer Beratung.
In diesem Kurs lernen Teilnehmende, wie sie Visualisierungen effektiv in Beratungssituationen im Kontext ihrer Lehrtätigkeit einsetzen können. Dies reicht von der Vorbereitung und Durchführung bis hin zur Nachbereitung von Visualisierungen in Beratungen. This online workshop aims to help lecturers to use humour in the classroom successfully. We will discuss how humour can be used as a tool to boost content retention and to heighten our rapport with students. Although we will discuss some theory related to humour, the main design of the course is to be as practical as possible. It will provide participants with a range of techniques designed to bring fun and humour to the classroom, and participants will practise a number of techniques themselves through controlled exercises. As well as considering good practice, the course will also point out types of humour to avoid, including forms of humour that may be culturally inappropriate or offensive. By the end of the course, participants will feel more confident in integrating humour into their classroom activities in order to create a memorable learning environment.

Damit mündliche Prüfungen fair ablaufen, zugleich rechtssicher sind und zu einer nachvollziehbaren Bewertbarkeit führen, bedarf es auch beim Prüfenden neben einer guten Vorbereitung auch adäquater Gesprächstechniken. Gerade vor dem Hintergrund der Verfügbarkeit sehr guter Anwendungssoftware künstlicher Intelligenz haben mündliche Prüfungen auch noch einmal an Bedeutung gewonnen.

 Der Workshop richtet sich zum einen an „Prüfungsprofis“, die schon Prüfungserfahrung haben, aber zu ihrem Prüfungsverhalten gerne einmal von Dritten Feedback bekommen möchten, sowie an „Prüfungsanfänger:innen“, die unterschiedliche Techniken einmal in einer Gruppe ausprobieren möchten. Mit Hilfe powerpointgestützter Inputphasen und in Breakout Sessions werden die Testgütekriterien von mündlichen Prüfungen reflektiert. Durch die Anwendung geeigneter Frageformen wird der Fragekatalog der Prüfenden erweitert. Dieser wird in Partner:innenarbeit in prüfungsgeeignete Gesprächstechniken übersetzt. Der Workshop endet in der Reflexion über geeignete Formen des Feedbacks und über die Anwendung von geeigneten Gesprächsmustern in kritischen Situationen.

Der Workshop findet als  Blended Learning Seminar statt (12 AEs). Im Vorfeld des Seminars werden in den zwei Wochen vor Seminarbeginn die Teilnehmenden durch vorbereitende Aufgaben an die Thematik herangeführt (4AEs). Nach dieser asynchronen Online-Vorbereitungsphase wird es einen Präsenztag (6AEs) geben. Nach Abschluss des Kurses laden kleinere Arbeitsaufträge (2AEs) dazu ein, die erlernten Inhalte in die eigene Lehrpraxis zu integrieren, die in den zwei Wochen nach der Veranstaltung abgegeben werden sollen.

This webinar series aims to introduce you to different aspects and approaches to implementing Sustainable Development Goals into your Teaching and thereby taking a more holistic view on how to help students develop critical competencies needed for meeting future challenges. "The 17 "Sustainable Development Goals" of the United Nations (UN) provide important impulses for shaping a future worth living – and also for teaching! Sie können schon (etwas) zeichnen und möchten wissen, wie Sie mit dem iPad und einem Eingabestift einfache Zeichnungen erstellen, um z.B. einen Sachverhalt zu visualisieren? Und Sie interessiert, welche Möglichkeiten Sie haben, um z.B. während eines Lehrvortrags live zu visualisieren? In diesem zweiteiligen Kurs lernen Sie, wie Sie auf dem iPad Inhalte zeichnerisch umsetzen und wie Sie wirkungsvoll live visualisieren. Sie erhalten eine Einführung in exemplarische Apps und deren Zeichen-Funktionen sowie zur Nutzung dieser Apps zum Live-Visualisieren. Hierzu zählen z.B. The seminar will focus on theoretical concepts, empirical studies and a didactic process model for the design of thinking training. The use of digital media like ChatGPT, in order to foster critical thinking, will also be addressed.  The aim of the seminar is to sharpen the theoretical understanding of critical thinking and to provide practical impulses and methods for the planning of teaching units in which critical thinking is to be fostered effectively.
The seminar consists of two sections. In the self-study phase, participants will deal with critical thinking as a concept and its implementation in their respective subject area. Further, participants will deliberate on how that kind of critical thinking can be fostered properly in their teaching situations and come up with a concrete example.
In the online face-to-face seminar, we will then delve deeper into critical thinking as a concept and discuss effective support strategies and the necessary framework conditions. Step by step, we will develop design principles for teaching and highlight specific methodological implementations that make for successful critical thinking training. Participants will also have the opportunity to demonstrate and discuss their example in order to further develop their teaching-approaches.

Eine weit verbreitete Eigenschaft bei guten Lehrenden ist die Fähigkeit, die eigene Lehre zu reflektieren und stetig weiterzuentwickeln. Manchmal sind es große Innovationen, oft aber auch Kleinigkeiten, die die Motivation steigern, den Lernerfolg erhöhen oder den Lehraufwand reduzieren. Die Lehr- und Lernforschung kann hier inspirieren, ebenso wie auch technologische Trends und Entwicklungen.

In diesem Kurs werden wir

• analysieren, wie man mit überschaubarem Aufwand seine Lehre möglichst effizient weiterentwickeln kann
• eine Reihe von didaktischen und technologischen Trends durchsprechen und ihr Potential für die Weiterentwicklung der Lehre diskutieren
• einige dieser potentiellen Innovationen direkt ausprobieren und damit experimentieren.

Der Kurs besteht aus zwei Teilen: 

• Teil I (4 Arbeitseinheiten): Zunächst geben wir in einem gemeinsamen Präsenzteil eine didaktische und technologische Übersicht. 
• Teil II (4 Arbeitseinheiten): Danach können sich die Teilnehmenden individuell zu einem Zeitpunkt ihrer Wahl mit verschiedenen Technologien auseinandersetzen – entweder vor Ort bei uns im InnovationLab (z.B. Virtual Reality Szenarien erleben) oder von zuhause aus mithilfe von asynchronem Selbstlernmaterial.

Diversitätsreflektierende Lehre kann viel dazu beitragen, dass Studierende, unabhängig von ihren Erfahrungen und Lebenssituationen, gleiche und faire Möglichkeiten haben und auch nutzen können, miteinander zu lernen und sich zu entfalten.
Was bedeutet das im Hinblick auf Methoden, Inhalte und Rahmenbedingungen von Lehre – und auf die eigene Position als Lehrende? Wie hängen Ressourcenorientierung, Diskriminierungsschutz und eine machtkritische Haltung miteinander zusammen?
Der Workshop bietet einen Einstieg in diese Fragestellungen. Er führt an die Konzepte Diversität und (Macht-)Differenzen, Intersektionalität, Diskriminierung und Privilegierung heran und setzt diese in Beziehung zum eigenen Lehrhandeln und der eigenen Position.

Agile Vorgehensweisen haben sich in zahlreichen Berufsfeldern als feste Größe etabliert. Unter diesen Methoden zeichnet sich SCRUM durch klare Rollenzuweisungen, die Arbeit in kurzen Zeiteinheiten (=Sprints) sowie regelmäßige Feedback- und Reflexionsrunden aus. Der Workshop gliedert sich in zwei Teile. In einem ersten Teil werden wir gemeinsam im Seminarraum über Aspekte der eigenen Lehre sprechen, die für uns ganz persönlich eine zentrale Rolle spielen. Außerdem setzen wir uns mit der strukturierten Herangehensweise an die Bildbetrachtung auseinander. Ablauf und Voraussetzungen

• Umfang und Zertifikat
  Mit dem Besuch des Grundkurs Hochschullehre Bayern erwerben Sie innerhalb eines Semesters das Zertifikat Hochschullehre Bayern (Grundstufe). Der Kurs besteht aus synchronen Elementen (ca. 40 Arbeitseinheiten/AE) und asynchronen Elementen (ca. 20 AE) vor und zwischen den synchronen Elementen. Bitte planen Sie sich hier Vor- und Nachbereitungszeit ein. Insgesamt erhalten Sie die für das Zertifikat der Grundstufe notwendigen 60 AE in der erforderlichen Aufteilung der Themenschwerpunkte (A, B, C, D, E). Bitte beachten Sie, dass für die Ausstellung des Zertifikats die Teilnahme an allen Kursterminen sowie die Erledigung aller dazwischenliegenden Aufgaben nötig ist. Die Aufgaben umfassen in der Regel 2 AE zwischen zwei Kursterminen. Je nach individueller Arbeitseinteilung kann aber auch etwas mehr Arbeitslast anfallen.
• Anwesenheit
  Unsere Kurse sind als interaktive Formate angelegt, die eine aktive Teilnahme erfordern. Wir gehen davon aus, dass unsere Teilnehmer:innen in allen synchronen Terminen an Plenumsdiskussionen und Gruppenarbeiten teilnehmen. Dafür ist bei synchronen Onlineelementen das Zuschalten der Kamera äußerst wünschenswert. Sofern geplant finden synchrone Präsenztermine vor Ort im Seminarhaus in der Barerstraße 21 statt.
• Fehlzeiten
  Bei Fehlzeiten oder fehlenden Abgaben über 4 AE (z.B. zwei asynchrone Elemente à 2 AE oder synchrone Elemente bzw. Anteile daran à 2 x 2 AE)  gilt die Regel, dass Ersatzleistungen erbracht werden müssen.
  Je nach Themenschwerpunkt der Fehlzeiten können nach Absprache mit der Kursleitung aus dem jeweiligen Themengebiet (A, B, C, D, E) Kurse (Kursangebot ProLehre | Medien und Didaktik oder ProfiLehrePlus) belegt werden, um die Fehlzeiten auszugleichen. Bei einer Fehlzeit ab 30 AE (50% des Kursumfangs) wird äquivalent zu anderen Kursen (siehe unsere Geschäftsbedingungen) keine Teilnahmebescheinigung ausgestellt und der Kurs kann nicht auf das Zertifikat Hochschullehre Bayern angerechnet werden.

Upon completion of the Foundation Course, you will acquire the “Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities” (basic level) within one semester.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course, participants will be able to,

• explain the psychology underlying teaching and learning principles that are relevant to university education and to derive strategies for teaching activities,
• apply the concept of Constructive Alignment to the planning and implementation of their courses,
• identify factors of successful presentations and apply them to presentations,
• identify central aspects of competence-oriented examinations and optimize exams on the basis of quality criteria,
• identify elements of goal-oriented advice and guidance for students and to apply select communication strategies appropriately,
• reflect on their own self-image as university lecturers and identify the potential for self-development.

Scope and certificate

By attending the Foundations of Teaching course, you will acquire the “Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities” (basic level) within one semester. The course consists of synchronous elements (approx. 40 work units/AE) and asynchronous elements (approx. 20 AE) before and between the synchronous elements. Please plan for preparation and follow-up time here. In total, you will receive the 60 AE required for the basic level certificate according to the requisite distribution of the main subject areas (A, B, C, D, E). Please note that attendance of all course dates and completion of all assignments is required for the certificate to be issued

Attendance

 Our courses are designed as interactive formats that require active participation. This course will be held in presence only and will take place on site at our seminar room at Barerstraße 21. Please make sure, that you will be able to attend all of the workshop days.

Absences

In the event of absences or missing submissions of more than 4 working units, substitute assignments/ work must be completed as a rule.

Depending on the topic/s missed, courses (ProLehre | Media and Didactics or ProfiLehrePlus) from the respective subject area (A, B, C, D, E) can be taken in consultation with the course instructors to compensate for the absences. In the case of absences of 30 AE or more (50% of the course load, see our terms and conditions), no certificate of attendance will be issued and the course will not count towards the “Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities”.

Please do not take our course if you anticipate major absences at the time of course registration. Please inform the course instructor as early as possible about planned absences even if they only affect individual elements. Your course instructors need this information for planning and can support you in finding a solution

Mit dem Besuch des Grundkurses Hochschullehre Bayern erwerben Sie innerhalb eines Semesters das Zertifikat Hochschullehre Bayern (Grundstufe).

Lernziele:

Am Ende des Kurses sind die Teilnehmer*innen in der Lage,

• für die Hochschullehre relevante lehr-/lernpsychologische Grundlagen zu erklären und daraus Strategien für ihr Lehrhandeln abzuleiten.
• das Konzept des Constructive Alignment für die Planung und Durchführung ihrer Lehrveranstaltung zu nutzen und zu vertreten.
• Erfolgsfaktoren gelungener Präsentationen zu identifizieren und in ihren Präsentationen anzuwenden.
• zentrale Aspekte kompetenzorientierter Prüfungen zu benennen und ihre eigenen Prüfungsaufgaben anhand von Gütekriterien zu optimieren.
• Elemente zielführender Beratung und Begleitung der Studierendenden zu identifizieren und ausgewählte Kommunikationsstrategien angemessen einzusetzen.

Ablauf und Voraussetzungen

• Umfang und Zertifikat
  Mit dem Besuch des Grundkurs Hochschullehre Bayern erwerben Sie innerhalb eines Semesters das Zertifikat Hochschullehre Bayern (Grundstufe). Der Kurs besteht aus synchronen Elementen (ca. 40 Arbeitseinheiten/AE) und asynchronen Elementen (ca. 20 AE) vor und zwischen den synchronen Elementen. Bitte planen Sie sich hier Vor- und Nachbereitungszeit ein. Insgesamt erhalten Sie die für das Zertifikat der Grundstufe notwendigen 60 AE in der erforderlichen Aufteilung der Themenschwerpunkte (A, B, C, D, E). Bitte beachten Sie, dass für die Ausstellung des Zertifikats die Teilnahme an allen Kursterminen sowie die Erledigung aller dazwischenliegenden Aufgaben nötig ist. Die Aufgaben umfassen in der Regel 2 AE zwischen zwei Kursterminen. Je nach individueller Arbeitseinteilung kann aber auch etwas mehr Arbeitslast anfallen.
• Anwesenheit
  Unsere Kurse sind als interaktive Formate angelegt, die eine aktive Teilnahme erfordern. Wir gehen davon aus, dass unsere Teilnehmer:innen in allen synchronen Terminen an Plenumsdiskussionen und Gruppenarbeiten teilnehmen. Dafür ist bei synchronen Onlineelementen das Zuschalten der Kamera äußerst wünschenswert. Sofern geplant finden synchrone Präsenztermine vor Ort im Seminarhaus in der Barerstraße 21 statt.
• Fehlzeiten
  Bei Fehlzeiten oder fehlenden Abgaben über 4 AE (z.B. zwei asynchrone Elemente à 2 AE oder synchrone Elemente bzw. Anteile daran à 2 x 2 AE)  gilt die Regel, dass Ersatzleistungen erbracht werden müssen.
  Je nach Themenschwerpunkt der Fehlzeiten können nach Absprache mit der Kursleitung aus dem jeweiligen Themengebiet (A, B, C, D, E) Kurse (Kursangebot ProLehre | Medien und Didaktik oder ProfiLehrePlus) belegt werden, um die Fehlzeiten auszugleichen. Bei einer Fehlzeit ab 30 AE (50% des Kursumfangs) wird äquivalent zu anderen Kursen (siehe unsere Geschäftsbedingungen) keine Teilnahmebescheinigung ausgestellt und der Kurs kann nicht auf das Zertifikat Hochschullehre Bayern angerechnet werden.
  Bitte belegen Sie unseren Kurs nicht, wenn Sie schon bei der Kursbuchung mit größeren Fehlzeiten rechnen. Bitte kündigen Sie planbare Fehlzeiten so früh wie möglich bei der Kursleitung an, auch wenn diese nur einzelne Bestandteile betreffen. Ihre Kursleitung benötigt diese Information für die Planung und kann Sie bei der Lösungssuche unterstützen.
• Voraussetzungen
  • Kurssprache: Diskussionen, Gruppenarbeiten und Aufgabenbesprechungen finden in der Kurssprache statt. Bitte beachten Sie dies bei Ihrer Kurswahl.
  • Zugehörigkeit zur TUM und Lehrtätigkeit: da der Kurs an vielen Stellen direkten Bezug zu Ihrer Lehrtätigkeit an der TUM macht, müssen Sie an der TUM lehren, um den Kurs abschließen zu können.
